[11/13/98] NightRehearsal :: "the curtain"
Rehearsal at 11 PM. The velvet curtain was closed. Behind it, a shape — slumped, like someone listening at the wall. I turned on the stage lights. The curtain was empty. When I turned the lights off again, I heard my chair being pushed back. Someone had been sitting behind me the whole time. 🎹
[10/28/98] violin12 :: "the gold leaf"
Every morning the gold-leaf patterns on the hall wall are the same. This morning they were different. They formed a face. Not human. Not animal. There is no bird with that many teeth. By noon it had faded. At 4:44 AM tonight I am going back. I will not bring my camera. I will bring glass. 🕯️

I reached the 89th key using a step stool. It is not ivory. It is bone. I did not press it. I wanted to. My finger curved on its own. I had to sit on my hand for twenty minutes before it stopped. The stool was moved back by morning. So was I. 🎹
[09/05/98] mother_of_maya :: "I hear them"
My daughter Maya is missing since 1988. I get recordings of the recitals every term. In the last disc, between the third and fourth movement, I can hear Maya's voice counting the measures. She counts to 47. She always counted to 47 during practice. She is still practicing. 🎶
[07/14/98] tuning_expert :: "the air is flat"
I was asked to tune the grand. I brought my strobe. The strings are perfect. The room itself is flat. Not the piano. The room. Sound does not behave correctly inside the hall — it pools in corners, drips, evaporates. I put my ear against the velvet curtain for one second. I will never do it again. It was breathing back.
