๐Ÿ“œ HISTORY OF MAPLEWOOD

"Most schools teach you how to leave. Maplewood teaches you how to stay."

A Timeline

YearEvent
1975Maplewood Middle opens. 312 lockers installed. (There are now 1314. Nobody has torn down a wall.)
1982A janitor finds the name "Marrow" carved inside locker 113. Attempts to paint over it fail โ€” the carving goes deeper each night. By morning it reaches the back wall.
1989First missing: Brandon Hsu, 13. Last seen at locker 113 during passing period. His locker is found open and empty. His combination (11-3-13) is written on the inside of the door in his own handwriting.
1991The third-floor wall is opened during construction. Behind it: a room with one thousand three hundred and fourteen chairs, all facing the same direction. All facing the school. The work crew was laid off that afternoon.
1993The honor roll board in the lobby gets a new entry overnight: "Marrow, Marrow, Marrow." Burned into the wood. (Not painted. Burned.)
1994A student (Danny) runs screaming from the third-floor fountain, saying the mold winked at him. He is taken home. The next morning, the mold is shaped like Danny's face. Danny returns to school the next week. He no longer speaks. He stands at the fountain. He drinks.
1997The principal resigns. His resignation letter reads: "I have been reassigned. The school has chosen me for the third floor. I accept." His desk was placed in a room that does not exist on the plan. The room is now on the plan. There are 313 rooms.
