[09/29/98] hallwayghost :: "the closet"
After hours. The principal's office was locked. The closet door inside, however, was open. Through it, the keyhole view: a room with no exits and a desk with a telephone that has no cord. A figure sat at the desk. It was Mr. Hadley. He picked up the telephone and said my name. I was in the hallway. Not in the room. He said "Come in, and bring your application." I had never applied. The next morning I found a completed application on my desk with my handwriting on it.
[09/18/98] custodian_joe :: "the clock at 4:44"
The clock on the third floor runs 11 minutes fast. At 4:44 AM (by the clock's time, which is 5:55 by mine), the bell rang. Mr. Hadley was standing at the window, NOT winding the clock โ he was Listening to it. I asked if the clock was broken. He replied: "No. It is being wound." By whom? "By years, Joe. By years."
[08/29/98] library lady :: "the endless library"
I worked in the library until 8 PM. At closing, the door to the principal's "reference closet" was ajar. Inside: 13 bookshelves, each containing the same book: The Principal's Record, 1909โ1998. Each book was identical. Each year had my full name in it. I was born in 1980. The 1952 book contains my full name. I do not drink. I do not know how it knows my mother's maiden name.
[07/07/98] varsity_eric :: "the chair"
The detention chair faces the wall. That morning I was made to sit in it. After 9 minutes I turned around. The chair was facing me. I had been sitting in it backwards. The keyhole on the wall behind me had a fresh fog of breath on the outside now. Mr. Hadley came in, wiped the fog away, and said: "He's learning the view from that side. He's a quick study, my father thinks so too." I was not in detention again. (My father died in 1987. He was buried in his coat and his best tie.) ๐

Sign the guestbook. Office encounters only. I do not want rumors about lockers; this is Hadley's school.
